“If Not Now When” by master songwriter and entertainer Freebo. It was magical to hear Freebo share his music and stories at our CAPS (Canadian Association of Professional Speakers) Calgary event on Saturday.
In the song he refers to what we long to do in our life, but tend to put off out of fear, doubt and the many other excuses we tell ourselves of why we are not ready or good enough. And he puts it right back to the listener, “If Not Now When?”
He played the song again that evening at a Christmas Party hosted by Alvin and Darlene Law. (That’s Alvin, playing the drums. He is a gifted speaker and musician.)
It’s been on my mind the whole weekend. “If Not Now When”
It resonated with me because I have put dreams on hold for many reasons: fear, doubt, self-pity. Yes, I’ve been in a funk underneath it all. It’s been three years since my “divorce” and truthfully, it still affects me more than I like to let on. I’ll spare you the details, but let’s just say, my mind does relive the “what-if’s” still too much. With three young daughters, it was always my plan that they would grow up with a traditional family, like I did. Now that it didn’t happen that way, it’s taken me longer than I thought to work through the conflicting emotions and the logistics of co-parenting. I’m thankful for the people in my life who love and support me and have helped me through it all.
I’m thankful too for God and my commitment to spiritual growth. My daily practice of prayer, meditation, personal development and journaling has kept me going when I didn’t think I had it in me. If this feels like you some days too, you are not alone. I’m with you… life is tough when our “plan” doesn’t match reality. If anything, the past three years have solidified my belief in “care for yourself first” if you want to be your best for those you love.
It’s also time to stop re-living the “what-if’s” and move on. Let’s start living the dreams we hold inside.
If Not Now, When?
I’m ready, are you?
Thank you, Freebo.
